Chapter Eleven

Denver, Colorado

Lila stared at the numbers on her computer screen. “I don’t understand. What is this?”

Dewey gave her a quizzical look. “It’s Bitcoin wallets.”

“I don’t know—”

“You know what Bitcoin is.”

“Yes, but I don’t understand what this is.”

Dewey shook his head. “I thought you and I were on the same page...”

“Dewey,” Lila said carefully, “you’ve become more ... difficult to understand over the past several days. When was the last time you slept?”

Dewey held up a can of Monster energy drink. “I don’t need sleep. I’ve got these beauties.”

“There are bags under your eyes, Dewey. You look like you’ve been punched in both of them. How many of those have you drunk?”

Dewey flashed her a maniacal grin. “A few dozen.”

“A few dozen?”

“That’s over the entire day,” Dewey said hastily.

“Oh my God. How many did you have yesterday?”

“Beats me. It’s getting hard to remember yesterday ... what was I saying?”

“Dewey! How many hours have you slept in the past three days?”

“I—I dozed off for a few minutes...”

“You’re going to kill yourself if you don’t get some sleep. And quit drinking those damned energy drinks. You’ll give yourself a heart attack!”

“Sure, sure,” Dewey said, taking a big gulp from his can.

“Dewey!”

“You meant stop now?” Dewey asked. He gave the can a sad look and then tossed it into a trash can next to his desk. “I need to explain it to you again so I know I’m doing a good job. When Eric gets back—”

“You’re not doing a good job,” Lila practically shouted. “You’re incomprehensible.”

“That’s ... that might be true,” Dewey allowed.

There was a knock at the door of Dewey’s office, and then Nancy entered. She gave Lila a sour look. “Did you talk to Eric?”

Dewey shrugged. “I saw the news about his mother—”

“How did you see the news about his mother?” Nancy demanded.

“I have bots that notify me of anything I might want to be notified of,” Dewey said. He let out a burp, and his eyes rolled back in his head. “I—I think I’ve had too many Monsters.”

Nancy turned to Lila and growled, “What did he tell Eric?”

“Honestly? I have no idea. He’s been trying to explain something about Bitcoin wallets to me for the past hour, but it doesn’t make any sense. He hasn’t slept in at least three days, he’s been chugging energy drinks like they’re water, and he’s...”

“Hey,” Dewey said, glaring at them. “I’m in the room, you know. I’m not a child.”

Nancy pointed at him. “What have you found?”

“I—I need to take a nap,” Dewey said. He plopped into his office chair and put his head down next to his keyboard. “I feel sick.”

“You’re going to be sick if you don’t tell me why you were calling Eric.”

Dewey didn’t respond.

“Dewey?”

Dewey let out a choking snore.

“He couldn’t have fallen asleep so quickly,” Nancy said.

“He’s been pushing himself,” Lila said. “He’s upset about what happened in Chicago. He blames himself.”

Nancy’s jaw worked, and then she muttered, “Dewey is ... unique. We take him for granted. He’s not an intelligence officer, or even a soldier.
